Thing Thursday: Workshop Orientation

Please join us for our free monthly workshop orientation on the first Thing Thursday of the month! Each month members and prospective members will have the opportunity to get checked off on basic safety training and observe demonstrations of our equipment.
Registration is not required.
Fundamentals of Metal CNC Machining
with Solomon Ortega
Machining is one of the most popular forms of manufacturing today, and a base understanding of its principals can help refine and improve designs.
This six week course will cover the fundamentals of working with CNC mills and lathes as well as how to use computer aided machining (CAM) to control them. Over the course of this class, students will learn how to construct simple parts in SolidWorks, convert the drawings into a CAM file, and use a machine to produce the part.
Intro to Vector Graphics
with Bradley Marshall
In this 6-week course, high school students and adults will learn how to use the open-source software Inkscape. With a focus primarily on vector graphics, they will explore how vectors and raster images differ and will create marketing materials as a project for the class. For said project, they will design a business card, poster, and T-shirt.
Woodworking Workshop Series - #3

In part three this workshop series, attendees will learn the fundamentals of shop safety, tool use, and woodwork project design. This project based course is designed with the beginner or intermediate woodworker in mind and is appropriate for high school through adults.
Workshop #3 - Night Stand Project - two 4 hour meetings
FLL Orientation Workshop
This 3 hour workshop is for both kids and adults considering participation in FIRST LEGO League or FIRST LEGO League Junior for the 2020/2021 Season. All sessions will be introduced to FIRST Core Values, program requirements and expectations, and competition details. FLL
Student Session: This session is for students ages 9-14*. Students will be introduced to the EV3 Robot, a sample challenge map from a past season, gracious professionalism, core values, and the research and challenge requirements for the upcoming "Game Changer" season theme.
FLL Jr. Student Session: This session is for students ages 6-10*. Students will be introduced to Lego WeDO robots, complete a robot build of their own, and learn how to make the robot move. They'll also be exposed to FIRST Core Values and learn about the "show me" project completed by participates in this program for the 2020-2021 season.
FIRST Coach & Mentor Session: This session is for parents and adults interested in learning what it takes to volunteer to coach or mentor a team. Partcipants will learn a little about all the FIRST programs: FLL Jr., FLL, FTC, and FRC, running all the way through high school, including costs, how to seek team sponsorship, scholarship opportunities for FIRST students, and time requirements. In addition, there will be breakout sessions focusing specifically on FLL Jr. and FLL for mentors eager to get an introduction to the robotics learning tools and project requriements for each group.
* (9 & 10 year olds may choose between FLL or FLL Junior, depending on their grade level and/or maturity.)
Cricut T-Shirt Workshop

Are you curious about the Cricut Maker, but don't know where to start? Join us for a special 2-hour workshop to learn everything you need to know about how to get started with a Cricut. We'll be making a custom t-shirt!
The class price includes materials, but t-shirt selection will be limited, so we recommend bringing your own shirt to embellish if you have something special in mind. Once you're comfortable with the Cricut, you can consider becoming a Huntsville STEAM Works member to have access to the machine and other plotter cutters for additional projects. Access to the Textiles Shop, Design Lab, Cricut and heat press comes with our basic membership!
